Buzzer not working? A checklist before you call anyone
Five things to check on a dead or half-working buzzer, and what the answer usually means.
Does one apartment fail, or all of them
If only one apartment does not ring, the fault is almost always on that line: a broken wire, a dead unit inside or a worn button. If every apartment fails, look at the shared parts, such as the power supply, the main panel or the door release.
Write down which apartments work and which do not. It saves time and helps whoever comes to fix it.
Check the simple things
Press the button and listen at the panel. Sometimes you hear a faint click that tells you the signal is going out. Check that the unit inside the apartment has not been unplugged or removed during painting. In some buildings a small transformer sits near the panel, and a dead one takes the whole system down.
Wet weather often triggers faults on street panels. If it only fails after rain, water is getting into the panel.
When to call
If the button, the unit and the power all seem fine, the fault is likely in the wires or the door release. That is when a trace with the right tools makes sense. Ask for a clear price on site before work begins, and for a note of what was replaced.
