Rekey or replace the locks after you move in

A plain comparison of the two options, and the cases where replacing really is better.

Why you should do something

When you move into a place, you do not know how many keys exist. Previous tenants, relatives, contractors and cleaners may all have had one. Changing what the lock responds to is the only reliable way to close that gap.

Rekeying keeps the hardware

A rekey alters the inside of the cylinder so a new key works and the old ones do not. The lock on the door stays. It is quicker and costs less than replacing, and the finish of your hardware does not change.

It works best when the lock is in good shape and you are happy with its quality.

When replacing is better

If the lock is loose, worn or damaged, a rekey only puts a new key in a failing lock. Replace it. The same goes for locks that are too basic for the door, such as a flimsy knob lock on a street-facing entry. In those cases, a new deadbolt or a higher-security cylinder is worth it.

A good locksmith will look at each lock and tell you which of the two it needs, rather than selling you the same thing for every door.
